    Upon the Altar of the Nation is a provocative and disturbing moral history of the Civil War. It is not a merely a religious or intellectual history, but a history that explicitly makes judgments about "the distances between the oughts and the actualities" (xii). The book seeks to develop an alternative more robust framework for moral reasoning. Partial realists concede a role for morality before and after war but deny its relevance during war, when military necessity takes over.
